Alabama Vacation Rentals – Alabama Travel
If you're looking for an active vacation with wonderful scenery, lots to see and plenty of outdoor activities, consider a vacation to Alabama.
Some of the variety of things to see include the USS Alabama, Lake Guntersville, Lake Wheeler and Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan on Dauphin Island. For diverse traveler interests, there is so much to consider in Alabama, it's no wonder "the heart of Dixie" is a popular destination. Visitors enjoy a variety of activities related to cultural, outdoors, sports-related, educational and historical interests.
Birmingham
If you want to start your trip with a city vacation, begin in Birmingham, where you can visit Visionland, an entertainment facility that features two parks with rides and shows. Visit the Talladega Superspeedway and watch a NASCAR race, or visit the Talladega National Forest, which features about 7,500 acres available for camping, the Appalachian Mountains and a large recreational area.
Also in Birmingham, visit the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center at the University of Birmingham. There, you can see live music, dance and theater performances from around the world. Since Alabama and particularly Birmingham are central figures in the history of the Civil Rights movement, there are many things to see relating to that important historical time. At the Birmingham Civil Rights institute, the history of the civil rights movement from WWI to today is documented with a cutting-edge multimedia presentation.
To further the educational experience, visit the non-profit McWane Center which promotes -- via interactive exhibits and programs -- adventures in science. There is also an IMAX theater located here.
Gulf of Mexico
Visit the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores region -- which face the Gulf of Mexico -- and you will find incredibly white sandy beaches and many choices in vacation rentals just perfect for a romantic getaway or a visit with family and friends. For food, consider the wide variety of seafood available. Or you might like some barbecue, Southern food, or Cajun Creole. Thanks to its location on the water, there are many activities relating to the water available, including deep-sea fishing. If you visit the Orange Beach area, consider taking a dolphin-watching cruise or going golfing. The shrimp festival -- a long-running tradition here -- is the best food festival in Alabama and occurs in the fall. While there, visit the many arts and crafts booths.
River Region
For history buffs, and those interested in civil rights and Confederate histories, there's no better place than the Montgomery, the Alabama state capitol. In this area visitors can find the Choctaw County Historical Museum, which features farming tools, a one-room log cabin from the 1840s and Civil War rifles. At the Rosa Parks Museum, there's a depiction of the early years of the civil rights movement, including Parks' role in it. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is also located here and is internationally famous.
In Selma, visit the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute and the Civil War Museum. For nature buffs, visit the White Oak Plantation, a 16,000-acre area that hosts year-round shooting, fishing and hunting. Located along Opintlocco Creek, the area includes a wide variety of summer programs including bird watching and nature trail hiking. The varied terrain include rolling hills, crop lands, dense wooded and swamp areas and pine plantations.
Northern Alabama
If you're interested in an outdoors experience, be sure to visit the Northern part of Alabama, a beautiful mountain region famous for its variety of outdoor activities. The area boasts a rich landscape of lakes, tree-topped mountains and waterfalls.
In Huntsville, be sure to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, or take in a variety of Civil War history. A diverse area, Huntsville's calendar is often filled with a variety of activities highlighting the multicultural diversity of the area.
The Florence/Muscle Shoals area in Northwest Alabama is teeming with outdoor possibilities. You can fish on the Tennessee River, home to garr fish, brim, croppie, catfish, and small and large mouth bass. For play on the water, either visit Wilson Dam -- a very large single lift lock -- or go boating on the Tennessee River or Wilson Lake.
For the sports enthusiast, visit Florence, home to the NCAA Division II football championship game, or play soccer or golf.
Want to enjoy some music? Visit Muscle Shoals, a popular tourist destination known for its position as the birthplace of the "Father of the Blues" W.C. Handy. There are also a variety of annual festivals here honoring Handy and Helen Keller. This area is also home to a portion of the Robert Trent Jones Golf trail.
