Plan your vacation with our Michigan highlights and local information
Michigan Vacation Rentals – Michigan Travel
If you've never thought about Michigan as a vacation destination, it's time to take a closer look. This state, known as the "Great Lakes State" offers an abundance of activities relevant to just about whatever you're looking for.
Where else can you visit the Malcolm X Home Site Marker and the Dinosaur Gardens in Ossineke? You might entertain yourself at the Telephone Pioneer Museum in Lansing or the Mackinac Island Butterfly House.
Northeast Michigan
Mackinac Island and Houghton Lake grace Northeast Michigan. A popular destination, Mackinac Island offers both yachting in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. This Victorian-style area looks and feels authentic with the only modes of transportation being walking, horse and buggy and bicycling. Houghton Lake, the largest inland lake in Michigan, features a variety of possible activities. If you are looking for a quiet, lazy day, consider lying in the grass near the lake. Or for a more active day, go kayaking or canoeing.
East Central Michigan
The area of East Central Michigan features popular locations like Flint, Port Huron and Bay City. At Port Huron, visitors can fish or find family fun like cider mills in the summer and various festivals in the summer. At Bay City, visitors can see the tall ships in the Saginaw River, or visit modern pubs, shops and restaurants in 19th Century structures. Flint, long known as the birthplace of General Motors, highlights its auto history with the Buick Research Gallery. Or enjoy a different kind of ride on the Huckleberry Railroad in Crossroads Village.
Southeast Michigan
Those looking for a more city vacation will enjoy Southeast Michigan, home to Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing. Music lovers will enjoy a visit to Detroit, the birthplace of Motown and a pioneer of techno music. By visiting clubs and stadiums in Detroit, visitors can get a feel for that music history. A visit to Cranbrook House, a historic manor, will expand the history lesson. In Ann Arbor, you can see the Gerald R. Ford Library. In Lansing, plan to save a few dollars. Lansing likes to advertise its ability to offer city experiences on a smaller budget. One of the most popular outings is a riverboat cruise on the "Michigan Princess".
Northwest Michigan
A variety of escape opportunities abound in Northwest Michigan. Visit Traverse City in the summer and enjoy celebrating its cherry production, or go golfing, yachting, fishing or visit the beaches. Rainbow trout are in abundance in Manistee, which boasts the best natural producing trout in the world. At Cadillac, a non-coastal area, enjoy the small town feel and active lifestyle there. Attractions include the Shay Steam Locomotive, which is in City Park. Petoskey is a beautiful resort town that's filled with architecture from a variety of periods.
West Central Michigan
Grand Rapids and Muskegon are found in West Central Michigan. Grand Rapids, the second-largest city in Michigan, has many opportunities for entertainment and nightlife. Dutch Village, which recreates a Dutch town with live demonstrations and specialty shops, preserves the Grand Rapids heritage. In Muskegon, thoroughbred racing is popular, but this area is also known for lumbering and its architectural heritage -- many Victorian homes from here have been featured on national TV.
Southwest Michigan
An interesting mix of resorts and agricultural history can be found in Southwest Michigan. St. Joseph sells lighthouse collectibles in many of its unique stores, and visitors enjoy its nationally acclaimed Silver Beach. While Benton Harbor -- St. Joseph's sister city -- celebrates its non-citrus fruit harvest with the Blossomtime Festival. It also offers hiking trails to natural springs. In Battle Creek, the Binder Creek Zoo is considered one of the best. And throughout the year, visitors enjoy Kellogg's Cereal City USA.
Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula area of Michigan is considered a special area thanks to its history and vast beauty. Isle Royale in the U.P. region is accessible only by plane or boat and has pure waters, while the North Woods Forest features wildlife, like wolves and moose. It, too, is unspoiled and functions as a living laboratory. Sault Ste. Marie, the oldest city in the Midwest, is the site of Soo Locks Waterway, which gets the most industrial usage in the world. Marquette features Peer at the Marquette Lighthouse and the iron docks.
The waters of Michigan
Thanks to its Midwest disposition, Michigan is a friendly state that benefits from sharing its borders with three of the Great Lakes -- Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. This setting is ideal for those looking for water activities, such as fishing, boating and yachting. There are a great variety of water sports to be found, and for those looking for peace and quiet, the sand beaches offer relief. The lake environment has helped create an abundant wildlife population, which includes white-tailed deer, moose, fox and beaver.
Some other things to do and sites to see in Michigan include: Ada Covered Bridge; Hackley and Hume Historic Site in Muskegon; Delaware Copper Mine in Copper Harbor; The Monet Garden in Muskegon; Pierce Stocking Bridge in Empire; Flats Old Cemetery Range Lighthouse in St. Clair; Ingham County Courthouse in Mason; and Bear Cave in Buchanan.
